SCRAPS is a line of unique handmade jewelry made from recycled & reclaimed materials. The true focus of this line of jewelry and accessories is the discovery of the beauty that still can exist from the scraps of our everyday lives.
Who knew you could feel so good and do so much by wearing jewelry? This line of jewelry has a tremendous amount of energy that goes directly into every piece. Some of the items used to create SCRAPS jewelry are:
milk jugs, old spoons, pie tins, & newspapers. Other components of this line are Fair Trade supported hand poured recycled glass beads from artists in Ghana and occasionally Indonesia, as well as the beautiful paper beads that are hand wound from old magazines & posters in Uganda by Beads for Life. Beads for Life is a wonderful organization that supports poverty struck women as they work their way through a voccational type schooling that once they graduate they will be able to provide for themselves and their families.
The SCRAPS line is made with sterling silver findings.
Through my process of developing these designs around reclaimed & recycled components - I learned so much from my new friends in Africa. They really do live that standard of WASTE NOT - WANT NOT.
I learned about some of the hardships of those affected by the LRA, in a war spanning 24 years that most folks haven't even heard of. I created a special line of earrings, called BeGen. "Gen" is the Acholi word for HOPE. 10% of the proceeds from the sale of each pair goes directly into the hands of the president of Invest in Children Africa (an NGO) for the purpose of funding rehabilitation camps for Ex-Child Soldiers & War Affected Youth in Northern Uganda that address specifically trauma therapy using art & music.
The BeGen line is made with lead-free, nickel-free silver plated surgical steel for sensitive ears.
SCRAPS jewelry in the last year has sponsored Charleston, SC's first GULU WALK, several documentary screenings for Invisible Children, and attended Lobby Days in Washington, DC.
